ECH TRANSCRIPT STUDIO · EARLY ACCESS

Your first review, step by step.

A short guide for reporters and scopists. Start with the practice sample if you just want to learn the buttons.

The sample has prepared findings—no paid AI check. It opens in a separate tab. You may review real transcripts when you are authorized to send them through our disclosed providers. Read the Privacy policy for restricted material and data handling.

Audio scoping: open one ZIP package

Choose Audio scoping in the sidebar. Files open locally on your device. Opening a ZIP does not upload anything or start paid transcription.

  1. Open ZIP package: select the ZIP you downloaded from your reporter or saved from ECH Transcript Studio. You do not need to unzip it. Check the filenames shown, then choose These are the same job—open. Include one RTF/CRE transcript, its full recording and saved audio analysis.
  2. Check speakers: suggested names come from introductions and transcript labels. Listen to voices marked “Needs verification.” Continuing does not confirm a name or rewrite CAT speaker labels.
  3. Draft & summary: read the disclosure and planned request count. Choose Create reviewed draft to authorize a paid OpenAI text review of every passage and detected difference, followed by a whole-job consistency check. This step uses saved speech-recognition text; it does not independently listen to audio or transcribe again. Keep the tab open. If interrupted, Save progress and resume unfinished sections; retries may incur usage.
  4. Review the result: supported mechanical edits are applied only after every section completes. Changes made shows before/after wording and Undo. Needs your judgment contains uncertain wording and protected CAT content, not automatic changes. Listen near a passage, then open it to edit supported text or keep the original. The full transcript and raw-difference tools remain available separately.
  5. Save and download: Save progress downloads a ZIP with the recording, original, draft history and current edits. Download the RTF draft plus readable change log, then test the RTF in a duplicate CAT job. Unresolved wording stays unchanged. A reviewed draft is not a finished acoustic scoping job. Jobs are not yet autosaved to My transcripts.

Full transcript is a separate listening and editing view, not a list of errors. “Audio located” and “Audio location approximate” describe playback timing—not correction confidence. Select a passage to use its right-hand controls, which stay visible while you scroll on a desktop. Passage numbers are not printed page/line numbers. Protected CAT conflicts remain read-only. Raw differences (advanced) retains the original one-by-one comparison; you do not need to work through it before creating a draft.

I have separate files, not a ZIP

In Windows, put one RTF transcript, its full recording and its saved analysis in a folder. Select those files, right-click, and choose Compress to ZIP file (or Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder). Include the actual audio—not a shortcut. Keep the original files. You can also choose “I have separate files instead” in ECH Transcript Studio.

My package is missing something

No recording: ask the sender to include the full audio. No saved analysis: you can listen and edit manually, but automatic matching is unavailable. This version does not transcribe a new recording. Multiple transcripts or recordings: make a separate package for each job with one full recording. ZIPs must be under 250 MB; larger recordings can be attached separately. The smaller backup option on Download excludes audio.

This ZIP is for ECH Transcript Studio—not CAT Restore. A native CAT backup must first be exported from CAT as RTF/CRE. To test your edited copy in CAT, download the experimental RTF and import it into a duplicate job. Layout and audio-sync compatibility are not yet validated. Speaker identities, notes and manual bookmarks remain in the ECH Transcript Studio backup, not CAT metadata. ZIP packages are not encrypted; store and share them securely with authorized people only.

  1. 01

    Open your transcript

Choose Choose file and select the TXT or ASCII export from your reporting software. Your original file is unchanged. A saved .scopeit.json backup also opens here.

Returning to a job? Choose Resume under Recent drafts on this device.

  2. 02

    Check the transcript

Optionally confirm names under Names & case terms. If a punctuation consistency choice appears, choose the style for this transcript or keep it as written. Select Check transcript and read the processing notice.

Keep the tab open. Progress shows how much has been processed, not a guarantee of accuracy. In the sample, choose Review sample suggestions instead.

  3. 03

Read the summary, then make your decisions

Review the findings in context. Apply correction keeps a suggested change; Keep original leaves the wording alone. The next item appears automatically. Use Undo if you change your mind.

Work through Verify and Document checks too. A proposed wording change may need audio; a caption or exhibit discrepancy may need the source document. Don’t mark a check reviewed until you actually check it.

Add note leaves a reminder at that location without changing the transcript. “Consider a paragraph here” is a useful example.

  4. 04

    Finish and download

Select Finish & download. Read any remaining-work warnings, then download the files you need below. Downloading does not resolve open verification items or certify the record.

Before leaving, wait for Draft saved on this device and download a Review backup for a portable copy.

Which download do I need?

TXT

Corrected transcript

The text with your approved changes and manual edits. Check the final layout in your reporting software.

PDF

Audit report

A readable record of findings, explanations, and review status. Not a certified transcript.

TXT

CAT follow-up checklist

Unresolved verification, document checks, and your notes for follow-up. Not a native CAT import.

JSON

Review backup

Reopens in ECH Transcript Studio with decisions and notes. Contains the original text; keep it secure.

Try this in the sample

Apply one correction, press Undo, then choose Keep original. Add a note and visit Finish & download. That covers the main controls without uploading a transcript or running AI. Sample practice is not automatically saved as a draft.

Before you close the tab

  • A browser draft is a recovery copy—not cloud storage or cross-device sync.
  • Use New transcript to begin another job. Check that the previous draft saved.
  • Keep the original and a downloaded backup. Undo history itself does not survive reloading.
  • Use a protected browser profile. Account-specific draft lists are not encryption. People with access to the profile or an unlocked review tab may still access local content. Close review tabs before changing accounts.
